Catch 22 by Joseph Heller is a frustrating book that carries you through the craziness of war. The main character Captain John Yossarian is fighting for his life and mind during world war two as a bombardier for the US Navy. The book tells the story of him and his mad squadron.
Yossarian Himself is mad in his own right as throughout the book he thinks he is trying to escape madness when he thinks everyone was trying to kill him. This often occurred in world war two because the paranoia of the other side infiltrating and killing would drive people to thinking that everyone was out or them. Yossarian has one thought in life and that is to survive the war although he flies deadly flights he always survives even to the point where everyone else thinks he’s dead but he’s really not .
Other characters in the book influence your thoughts on war. The most important being Cornel Cathhart he is the main leader throughout the book you see his dominance makes him stupid as he constantly raises the missions a bombardier must do before they can have a break of go home . This also affects the other characters in the book who are constantly fighting to get home and away from danger. There are many other characters within the book although some may be dead at first glimpse like the man in white they all tell you a different story of the harshness of war.
The plot for catch 22 does not flow in chronological order instead it uses constant flashbacks to tell the mixed tales. This complicated structure makes you understand the insane nature of war just like what the characters are facing. The books many tales make it difficult to fully understand the plot line. All I can say is there at war not just with Germany but also with themselves as they are constantly trying to escape. The plot thickens to mysterious faked deaths and constant struggles with commanding officers and Doc Daneeka . Overall. Its a very complex read so I would only suggest it to thoose that are advanced readers.
